以前、私のメルマガ記事について、ミスを指摘するメールを受け取ったことがありました。 私はロンドン２週間短期留学をしたので、英語で日記を書いてみることにしたのです。毎回の日記の最後に「Bob’s your uncle.」と書いていました。英会話の先生が教えてくれて、気に入っていた表現です。ウィキペディアによると、「万事ＯＫ」という意味で、イギリス独特の表現のようです。ロンドンのブラックキャブを降りるときに、運転手さんに「Bob’s your uncle!」と言ったら、とても喜んでくれました。
I received an e-mail about my mistake in my article. I tried to write my travel journal in English because I went to study in London for a short period. It was my first article written in English. I wrote “Bob’s your uncle.” at the end of every article. My English teacher taught me that phrase and I liked it. Wikipedia said, "Bob's your uncle" is an exclamation that is used when "everything is all right". And "Bob's your uncle" is a phrase commonly used in the United Kingdom. I used it when I got out of a Black Cab and the driver looked happy!
その記事の表現に対して、「使い方が間違っているのでは？」と読者の方よりメールがきたのです。その方は、まわりのネイティブスピーカーにも確認してくださったようで、長い説明のメールをくださいました。「間違っているのかなぁ？ 英会話の先生に確認をしたけど」と、半信半疑ではありましたが、私のために時間を使って、色々調べてくださったことに感謝のメールを出しました。
My reader emailed me and she said,”Your way of using it may be wrong”. She asked native speakers around her and she explained about it in a very long e-mail. “Is it wrong? I had my teacher confirm that.“ Even though I was half in doubt, I thanked her because she took her time to research it for me so I emailed her about it.
英会話の先生に再び確認をしてもらいました。そして彼は言いました。「クリエイティブライセンスって知ってる？」と。続けて言いました。「意味は、君がクリエーターなら、基本的に好きなことができる。誰も、それが間違いだとは言う権利はないんだ。なぜなら、人間として、 君の考えていることをすることが正しい、というライセンスなんだよ」と。
I had my teacher confirm about whether that was wrong or not. And he said, “ Do you know about creative license?” and continued talking “The meaning is, basically you can do what you want to do if you are creative. Nobody can tell you it’s wrong because as a human being you have a license to do what you think is right.”
