お父さんへ
今日、引き出しの中にお父さんを見つけました。新しいお父さんは、自分のようでもありました。私はバトンを引き継いだようですね。ありがとう！
Dear Dad,
I found you in a drawer today. I found a new you in which I saw myself. I’ll carry the baton for you. Thanks.
先日、実家のある一部をリフォームするために、父の仕事場の整理整頓をしていました。昔の人なので、捨てるのが苦手です。そんな収集癖のあるタイムの引き出しから、子供のころからのわが家の専売特許のような年賀状が、きちんとファイリングされて見つかり、懐かしさがこみ上げてきました。
The other day we were tidying up my father's workshop to renovate a part of my parents' house. An Old-fashioned person is not very good at throwing things away. When I found in the drawer of such a collector, the New Year's cards that have been an exclusive edition produced by my family since my childhood, I was filled with nostalgia.
そのほか、父の会社のデザインロゴの下地や、郵送物に貼り付ける会社のシールなどもありました。赤いシールしか見覚えなかったのですが、実はブラックやシルバーなどもあり、オシャレで驚きました。
Apart from that, there was also a design drawing of my father's company logo and a company sticker to put on mailings. I only remembered seeing red stickers, but actually, there were also black and silver ones, which surprised me with their stylishness.
とても変わった住所録がありました。まるで「スクラップブック」になっており、郵便物や広告などの住所部分を切り取ったそのものが貼られていたのです。妹と感心するとともに、大爆笑です。
And he had a very unusual address book. It looked like a "scrapbook" with the addresses cut out from envelopes or advisements pasted in to it. My sister and I were impressed and had a good laugh.
年賀状、ロゴシール、変わった住所録は、作品として保管しておくことにしました。それらを見て、ふと思いました。もし、父がこちらの才能を活かす人生だったら、どうなっていたのだろうか？と。もう一つの人生も、パラレルワールドにはあったのではないかと。
I decided that New Year's cards, logo stickers and unusual address books are to be kept as works of art. When I saw them and I wondered what his life would have been like if he had been able to make use of these talents. I wondered if there was another life in a parallel universe.
でもそれは父の生まれた36年後に地球にやってきた私が、引き継いだようです。デザインをしたり、編集をしたりすることは、私のビジネスには欠かせないものとなっています。私たちは、自分の才能を仕事として活かしやすい時代に生きています。引き出しの中に才能を眠らせておくのはもったいないのです。
But it seems the baton has been passed to me, who came to earth 36 years after my father was born. Designing and editing skills have become an integral part of my business. We live in a time when it is easy to put our talents to work. It would be a shame to leave our talents in a drawer.
