私：あなたには未来が見えているんじゃないかと、時々思いますよ。私にとって、あなたのアイデアは実現しやすいものだからです。なんででしょう？ 具体的だから？
Me: Sometimes I think you can see the future. For me your idea can be made to happen easily because it’s specific, right?
英会話の先生：
それは私のアプローチが違うからです。ほとんどの人は「あれをやりたい」と思って「どうやってやるんだ」と言うのですが、別の見方としては、メソッドを見つけて「そのメソッドを試してみて、それで何ができるか見てみよう」と言うことになります。これは違うプロセスです。「これを作りたい」と思ってはじめるのは、あまりにも難しいです。本当に難しいです。最初にメソッドを見つけてしまうと まあ、方法は作れるものを作るだけなので、その方が楽なんですけどね。
人はときどき、「何をすべきか」「何を作るべきか」に焦点を当てすぎてしまうことがあります。クリエイティブな人の多くは、何をしたらいいのかわからない。自分が何を作りたいのかわからないから、何を作りたいのかわからないし、何を作るか決めても、それを作るために本当に難しいメソッドを用いるから、実際には作れないし、失敗するかもしれない。それよりもまずメソッドについて考えた方がいいのかもしれませんね。そして、それを使って何を作るか見てみようと。
My English teacher:
That’s because I have a different approach. Most people think like I want to do that thing and they say, “How do I do that?” but another way to look at it is you find a method and you say I’m gonna try the method and see what the method makes. It’s a diffrent process. It’s too difficult if you start with I wanna make that. It’s really tough. If you find a method first. Well, the method only makes the thing it makes so it’s an easier process.
Sometimes people focus too much on “What should I do. What should I make?” A lot of creative people don’t know what to do. I don’t know what I want to make, they say and so they just never get to doing somethings because they don’t know what it is they want to do or they decide what to make, but then making that thing has a really difficult method so they might not actually be able to make it and fail. I don’t know maybe it’s just best to think about a method first instead. And see what you make with it.
確かにそうだと思います。私が店長としてブログを始めたとき、ブログが私に何をもたらすのか知りませんでした。1D1U オンランキャンプを始めたときも、そのコミュニティが私に何をもたらすのか知りませんでした。だから面白い未来を迎えに行くために、オンラインコミュニティでブログをはじめたのです。
I think that is exactly right. When I started my blog as a shop manager, I didn’t know what the blog would make for me. When I started 1D1U online Camp I didn’t know what the community would make for me. So I started blogging to an online community to pick up an interesting future.
しかしながら、ブログをどう始めたらいいですか？ と私はよく質問されます。それでは本末転倒だといつも感じています。なにをつくるのか決めてから、やり方を見つけるのではなく、やり方を見つけてから、なにをつくるのかを決めるのです。この考えを先週のメルマガに書きました。

When I was a shop manager, I imagined a magazine. What should I do to make something like a magazine on the internet? So I started blogging to teach customers about how to choose outfits and new products. I didn’t know what would be successful or not. I just tried to blog to make an interesting future. In the case of 1D1U community, when I thought “what should I do to make users keep a diary?”, the method was to create an online community.

■編集後記
自分らしいセンスでやっている人というのは、方法が逆なことが多いのです。人のやり方を真似するのではないからです。英会話の先生もそういうタイプだったので、私へのアドバイスが見事に決まっていたのでしょう。メソッドを先に教えてもらい、だったら自分なら何ができるのかな？と手持ちのコマで実行するので、アイデアを具現化しやすくなります。
