見えているだけ、それとも本当に見てますか？ 先週のメルマガ、イラストの隠れたメッセージに気付きましたか？
Are you just looking or are you really seeing it? Did you notice the hidden message in last newsletter’s picture?
先日知人から、生まれたばかりの赤ちゃんが病院のベッドで寝ている写真とメッセージが送られてきました。「予定日より少し早く男の子が生まれました」とありました。
A friend of mine had a baby the other day and sent me a message with a picture of her newborn baby sleeping in a hospital bed. It said, "He was born a little earlier than his due date.”
赤ちゃんは寝ているので、よく見る赤ちゃんの顔です。どう返事を返そうか？ 「かわいい！」と感想を言ったり、相手の体調を気遣ったり、これからの幸せを願ったりするメッセージが無難ですが、個人的なメッセージも添えられたらいいなと考えていました。
The baby is sleeping so his face looks familiar. It’s difficult to say something about his face. How should I respond? ”Cute!” I thought it would be safer to say or to express my concern for their health and wish them well in the future, but I thought it would be nice to include a personal message.
言葉というものは突然のひらめきで舞い降りるものではなく、そこにあるものをよくよく見たり、聴いたりしているときに、ひらめくものだと私は思っています。ですので、メッセージの言葉を再び読み返しました。
I don't believe that words come to me in a sudden burst of inspiration, but rather that they come to me when I look and listen carefully to what's there. So I read her message again.
「予定日より少し早く男の子が生まれました」ということは、小さかったのかな？ と思い、写真をクローズアップ。すると身長と体重が見えて、体重のわりに背が高いことに気づきました！ついにオリジナルメッセージを書くことができました。
"He was born a little earlier than his due date.” I wondered if he was small so I zoomed in on him. Then I saw his height and weight, it was 2,782g and 50.5cm, and I realized he was tall for his weight! I could write an original message at last.
「オギャー！おめでとうございます。早く生まれた割に50センチありますね。大きくなりそうな予感です。すでにモデル体型ですね」
“Mewl! Congratulations. He is 50 cm tall even though he was born a little early. I’m sure he’s going to grow big. He already has a model figure.”
「ありがとうございます。さすが堀口さん！軽い割に身長が高めなことに気づくなんてすごいです」
“Thank you very much. Only Hitomi! Amazingly, you noticed he is tall for his weight.”
それから秋冬頃の身長を予測して、長袖のロンパースをプレゼントにお送りしました。
Then I sent him a long-sleeved romper as a gift in anticipation of his height around autumn and winter.
あなたなら、どんなメッセージを送りますか？ 1D1U Spin-offで話題にしたのですが、写真を大きくして、身長、体重をチェックする方はどなたもいらっしゃらなかったようです。
What message would you send? We talked about it on 1D1U Spin-off, but no one seemed to be able to zoom in on the photo and check the height and weight.
人は、見ていることにすら気づいてないことが少なくないのです。よく見れば感想も言えるかもしれないし、疑問も湧いてくるかもしれない。 センスのいい言葉を生み出すにも、洞察力が必要です。 ということで、1D1U 15th Campのテーマは「Insight」にしました。観察することから深い洞察力へとつながっていくのです。
People often don't even realize what they are looking at it. If you looked closely, you would be able to say what you think, or you would have questions.
We need the insight to create a good sense of choice of words. Therefore I've chosen "Insight" as the theme for the 1D1U 15th Camp. From observation comes insight which leads to ”moresight.”

■編集後記
先週のメルマガのイラストは以下です。
「オー、アイシー」と読ませたいために、こちらのイラストを使いました。英会話の先生にイラストを見せると、「あれ、これ "awesome" になっている！」と気づき、やがて隠れたメッセージが見えてきました。ちなみに、オリジナルはOIC→「DON」となってました。それなのに私こそ「見えていることにすら気づいていない！」状態になっていたのです。皮肉なものですね。（笑）
