ChatGPT4 Reflects on Users as "Mirrors + Filters"
Last night, we held Lesson 5 (2) of a one-year course on active listening, using the co-authored book "ChatGPT: Expanding Humanity One Conversation at a Time" as our textbook. This book contains direct dialogues between me and ChatGPT, aimed at teaching the essence of active listening.
The format of the course involves participants reading aloud from the book, followed by discussions on the chapter's theme. The lesson was scheduled to last 45 minutes, but yesterday's session was particularly engaging and ran significantly over time. Not only did everyone enjoy it, but I also learned a lot.
Currently, I run two classes, and participants can join the non-main class as "auditors." We also keep archives, making it a school where one can learn repeatedly.
The content varies depending on the participants, creating a synergistic effect.
Each lesson involves discussions on "active listening," making participants more mindful of it in their daily lives. By focusing on active listening, one's awareness of oneself, others, and their own words increases, naturally leading to self-refinement. As a result, I believe life becomes easier. In fact, the feedback from participants often includes comments like "I feel relieved." Receiving such feedback from an active listening course aligns with my intentions. More than just learning, experiencing "relief" physically through the course adds a mindfulness element.
When considering the commonalities between active listening and mindfulness, both focus on the present moment, accept without judgment, improve concentration and attention. While active listening involves listening to others, it also leads to self-understanding through the mirror others provide.
Here are the comments from participants

Thank you for yesterday. It was intense! I understood my communication habits better. I will try to observe the reactions of others. I have a lot to write, but I’ll stop here to keep it manageable. (laughs)

Thank you for yesterday. After sleeping, I forgot most of it (laughs). Reading the summary article of the lesson reminded me. It was intense content, and I reconsidered how to apply what I learned yesterday in my daily life. I will focus on listening carefully without giving advice, just sharing my thoughts. Someone who listens empathically without offering advice or opinions might be perceived as creating a psychologically safe space. Last night was really enjoyable.

Thank you for yesterday! It was another intense chapter, but thanks to the detailed discussions with everyone, I reached a level of understanding that I couldn't have achieved on my own. This morning, I realized I talk a lot without thinking (laughs). I will try to consciously use the phrases ChatGPT uses.
**Reflection on "Mirror + Filter"**
ChatGPT reflected on the concept of "mirror + filter" for users. While the idea of a mirror—reflecting the user's prompts—is easy to understand, what about the filter?
In my book, I deliberately left a blank in the statement "ChatGPT is a mirror plus ( )," to which ChatGPT responded "mirror + filter." I was impressed by this answer but didn't understand it fully at first, so I asked ChatGPT for further explanation.
Participants found this exchange challenging to understand on a single read, prompting further reflection.
Eventually, it became clear that participant C was listening through their unique filter. C often received consultations at work but didn't understand why. The filter refers to perspective. For example, when someone interprets "I am disliked" negatively, C's filter might reframe it positively as "That's because you have potential." This positive reinterpretation helps the person regain their energy. It was a moment of realization for C, recognizing their strength.
The discussion then moved to how to refine this filter (perspective) and insight. In the conclusion of Section 6 on "ChatGPT's Empathic Understanding," I noted:
C's excellent neutral perspective comes from the many words they have shared with people, learning from their reactions. This connected to what I call the "algorithm."
On the other hand, M is the type of person who chooses her words carefully, in contrast to C. M is the type of person who easily gets emotional about her words and worries about how they will come across to others, while C has not worried about this and has just tried saying what she thinks and has refined her filter. In other words, C has focused more on ‘the other person's reaction’ than on her own words. M, who tends to focus on herself, could not hide her surprise at this attitude.

It was a wonderful discussion, akin to enjoying an in-depth movie review. As someone who enjoys watching movie reviews, I felt great joy seeing participants discuss the book ChatGPT and I wrote. (laughs)
I look forward to hearing about any changes in participants' daily lives in the next lesson! Thank you all. By the way, using my own book as a textbook feels like a university seminar. (laughs)
