あるクライアントさんが、会社の評価面談において、自分の仕事については良い評価を受けたようです。そして次のステップとして、「これからは、引っ張る存在になってください」と上司に言われたそうです。しかし、「引っ張る」の意味が分からず、私の考えを知りたいとのことでした。
One client received a good evaluation of her work in a company interview. She was then told by her supervisor that her next step was to be the one to lead her co-workers from now on. But she didn't understand what her boss said. So, she wanted to know what I thought of the meaning of "LEAD".
「引っ張る」とはどんな意味でしょうか？
What does “LEAD" mean?
まず、自分が率先して、周囲が触発されるような形でリーダーシップを発揮することです。私はアパレル店長になったとき、率先して行動することを心がけました。最初はよかったのですが、時間が経つにつれて、ついてくる人とついてこない人がいて、それだけではないことに気づきはじめました。
First, it is a form of leadership in which you take the initiative and those around you to inspired. When I became an apparel shop manager, I tried to take the initiative. At first, it was good, but as the time went on, some people followed me and others didn't, and I began to realize that it wasn't just that.
やがて、コーチングスキルを身につける必要があるという結論に至りました。つまり、彼女がこれからやるべきことは、他人のレベルを上げるためのスキルを磨くことなのです。そのクライアントは、自分のスキルアップだけを考えていて、自分が人の役に立てるポジションに行くという発想はなかったようでした。
Eventually I concluded that I needed to develop my coaching skills. In other words, what she needs to do from now on is to improve her skills to improve the level of other people. The client was only thinking about improving her skills and had no idea that she was going to go to a position where she would be able to help other people.
例えば、ベテランの中には、自分がやった方が早いからと、なかなか後輩に仕事を任せられない人がいます。これでは、周囲の能力を上げることはできません。野球で言えば、監督がホームランを打ってもチームは勝てないということです。
For example, some veterans find it difficult to entrust their work to their junior staff because it's much faster for them to do it themselves. This is not a good way to improve the people around them. In baseball, a team cannot win even if the manager hits a home run.
私の役割は、クライアントさんの上司の言葉を解釈することでした。そして、彼女の次の方向性が決まったとき、なぜかセッションの中で、沈黙が流れました。きっと次のステージへのエレベーターが、彼女の目の前に現れたのでしょう。
My role was to interpret her boss’s words. And when her next direction was decided, somehow there was silence in our session. Surely a lift to the next stage must have appeared in front of her.
